[Page last updated: 22 May 2025]

Academic Year: 2025/26
Owning Department/School: Department of Mathematical Sciences
Credits: 5 [equivalent to 10 CATS credits]
Notional Study Hours: 100
Level: Honours (FHEQ level 6)
Period:
Semester 1
Assessment Summary: EXCB 100%
Assessment Detail:
  • Closed-book written examination (EXCB 100%)
Supplementary Assessment:
Like-for-like reassessment (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites: Before taking this module you must ( take MA22014 AND take MA22015 ) OR take MA20227 OR take MA20302
In taking this module you cannot take MA30086
Learning Outcomes: By the end of the module you will be able to:
  • understand the ethical considerations and governance problems related to medical studies.
  • design a clinical trial to compare a new treatment against a control, that meets a stated power requirement and protects against possible sources of bias
  • analyse survival data subject to right censoring
  • interpret statistical analyses presented in a medical journal article

Synopsis: You will study the principles of randomisation and experimental design in the context of medical studies. You will learn how to analyse survival data subject to censoring, a common form of response variable in clinical trials.

Content: Revision of statistical tests set in a medical context and introduction of non-parametric tests. Design of medical studies and ethical considerations. Clinical trials: phases I to IV of drug development. Sample size calculation Parallel arm, cross-over, case-control and cohort designs Protecting against bias: randomization, blinding, "intention to treat" analysis. Missing data, estimands Relative risks and odds ratios, Mantel-Haenszel test Survival analysis: censoring, the hazard function, Kaplan-Meier estimator, log-rank test, Cox's proportional hazards model. Presentation of results.
