[Page last updated: 22 May 2025]

Academic Year: 2025/26
Owning Department/School: Department of Mathematical Sciences
Credits: 10 [equivalent to 20 CATS credits]
Notional Study Hours: 200
Level: Honours (FHEQ level 6)
Period:
Semester 2
Assessment Summary: CWRI 25%, EXCB 75%
Assessment Detail:
  • Report individual (CWRI 25%)
  • Closed-book written examination (EXCB 75%)
Supplementary Assessment:
Like-for-like reassessment (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites: Before or while taking this module you must take MA32022
In taking this module you cannot take MA30085
Learning Outcomes: By the end of the module you will be able to: - identify a suitable time series model, fit this model to the data and forecast future values - apply the multivariate normal distribution in data analysis - apply graphical models to describe spatial and other types of data - present results in a suitable style

Synopsis: You will learn about models for data with complex structures such as time series, spatial data, and linear models with random effects. You will develop skills in data analysis through case studies involving these types of data.

Content: Probability models for time series Estimating the autocorrelation function and fitting ARIMA models. Forecasting: Exponential smoothing, forecasting from ARIMA models. Conditional independence properties of the multivariate normal distribution Graphical representations of multivariate data Multivariate models with special structure such as Gaussian random fields and spatial models. Gaussian random fields; Markov random fields Analysis of spatial data and other structured data sets Application of the above methods to a variety of real-life statistical problems.
