On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the disease process in cancer, and the complexity of its treatment.
- Utilise a range of ICT and cognitive skills in acquiring knowledge and understanding and applying them to given situations.

| Synopsis:
| In this unit you will
- explore recent advances in molecular and cellular processes underlying tumour development and its treatment.
- develop your knowledge and understanding of the disease process in cancer, and the complexity of its treatment, and give examples of current treatment regimes in particular clinical settings.

| Content: | The cell and molecular biology driving tumour initiation and progression including tumour suppressor mechanisms and failure in apoptosis, epigenetic changes, activation of oncogenes, angiogenic processes and metastasis, cancer stem cells and cancer immunology. The molecular mechanisms of action of the major classes of drugs currently in use and their shortcomings, including chemotherapies, targeted therapies and novel targets.
