[Page last updated: 16 May 2025]

Academic Year: 2025/26
Owning Department/School: Department of Life Sciences
Credits: 5 [equivalent to 10 CATS credits]
Notional Study Hours: 100
Level: Honours (FHEQ level 6)
Period:
Semester 2
Assessment Summary: EXCB 100%
Assessment Detail:
  • Closed-book written examination (EXCB 100%)
Supplementary Assessment:
Like-for-like reassessment (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites: Pre-requisite knowledge of the Immune system basic understanding of key components and function (SL22138 or SL20017 or SL20018 or similar)
Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of recently identified target molecules and processes in the immune system.
  • Evaluate the role of these targets in particular therapeutic areas.
  • Utilise a range of ICT and cognitive skills in acquiring knowledge and understanding and applying them to given situations.

Synopsis: In this unit you will: - explore recent developments in understanding the immune system and its role in human diseases as well as examine how such understanding can lead to identification and exploitation of novel drug targets for future therapy. - develop your knowledge of recently identified target molecules and processes in the immune system and give examples of the role of these targets in particular therapeutic areas.

Content: A range of topics will be discussed focusing on molecular target linking to cellular process linking to therapeutic area. Topics will be selected on the basis of their currency at a given time - examples may include mast cell degranulation, apoptosis, chemotaxis, inflammation, inflammasome processing linking to respiratory, inflammatory and autoimmune disease states such as allergy, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma.
