Requisites: In taking this module you cannot take SL32054
Before taking this module you must take SL22041 OR take BB20149 OR take SL20024
Learning Outcomes: After taking this unit, students should be able to:
* explain the basic principles underlying development and organogenesis in vertebrates organisms;
* relate the mechanisms of development to cellular and molecular events;
* describe the applications of research in developmental biology and explain their implications to human developmental defects;
* Explain the fundamental molecular and cellular processes controlling the induction and maintenance of the pluripotent state and the directed differentiation towards different cell types;
* Explain the properties of adult stem cells and the pathways controlling their differentiation.
* Explain current models of the mechanisms of neural development;
* Utilise studies of neural development in selected vertebrate model systems

Synopsis: Build on your previous knowledge and gain a comprehensive grounding in developmental biology at an advanced level. You'll understand the excitement of recent research advances, and their implications on human developmental defects. You will also explore aspects of adult and embryonic stem cell biology, cellular reprogramming and developmental neurobiology.

Content: Lectures will cover a diverse range of topics on developmental genetics, stem cell biology and developmental neurobiology, which could include: myogenesis; epithelial-mesenchymal interaction;germline development; developmental defects and wound healing; specification of cell fate within the CNS; specification of cell fate within the neural crest; proliferation of neuronal precursors; neurotrophins and neuronal survival; fundamental aspects of adult and embryonic stem cell biology; cellular reprogramming and how stem cells and their progeny can be used in basic research and cellular therapies.
