[Page last updated: 15 May 2025]

Academic Year: 2025/26
Owning Department/School: Department of Life Sciences
Credits: 10 [equivalent to 20 CATS credits]
Notional Study Hours: 200
Level: Honours (FHEQ level 6)
Period:
Semester 1
Assessment Summary: EXCB 100%
Assessment Detail:
  • Closed-book written examination (EXCB 100%)
Supplementary Assessment:
Like-for-like reassessment (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites: Pre requisite basic knowledge of receptor theory and genes (Health and Disease/ SL20005 / SL22020 or equivalent)
Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, the student should be able to:
  • Demonstrate theoretical and practical knowledge of commonly used techniques in molecular biology and recent studies of receptor function and expression.
  • Evaluate examples of the technologies available to analyse the behaviour of functional receptor structures and apply to pharmacological research questions.
  • Utilise a range of ICT and cognitive skills in acquiring knowledge and understanding and applying them to given situations.

Synopsis: Explore recent developments in general receptor pharmacology and mechanisms associated with modulation of receptor function. Develop your knowledge of recent studies of receptor function and expression, Describe the technologies available to analyse the behaviour of functional receptor structures.

Content: Topics discussed will be within the general theme of receptor expression and function. Topics will be selected on the basis of their currency at a given time - examples may include mechanisms of receptor desensitisation, receptor up- and down-regulation, structural biology of receptor families, advanced ligand-receptor theory, gene manipulation - polymerase chain reaction, gene cloning and expression systems, site-directed mutagenesis. Generation of cellular reagents for high throughput screening of drug candidates. Genomics, proteomics and microarrays. Transgenic animal models, gene targeting and therapy, gene editing, bioinformatics and application of experimental techniques in pharmacological research.
