Requisites: Before taking this module you must take MA22016 OR take MA22034 OR take MA20220 OR take XX20231
In taking this module you cannot take MA20221
Learning Outcomes:
* Construct an initial mathematical model for a real world process.
* Analyse, evaluate and critically assess a mathematical model.
* Identify alterations or elaborations of proposed model in light of discrepancies between model predictions and observed data or failures of the model to exhibit correct qualitative behaviour.

Synopsis: In this unit you will explore the use of mathematical modelling to understand the world around us. Application areas may include engineering, biology, medicine and geophysics. You will study the formulation of models using different mathematical frameworks. You will learn how to analyse, interpret, elaborate and discuss these models.

Content: The modelling paradigm; objectives of mathematical modelling; the iterative nature of modelling; falsifiability and predictive accuracy; Occam's razor, paradigms and model components; self-consistency and structural stability. The principles of using data in modelling. The stages of modelling, including model formulation, fitting and validation. Application of mathematical and computational methods in the analysis of extended case studies.
