HL32026: Environmental and occupational exercise physiology

[Page last updated: 22 April 2025]

Academic Year: 2025/26
Owning Department/School: Department for Health
Credits: 5 [equivalent to 10 CATS credits]
Notional Study Hours: 100
Level: Honours (FHEQ level 6)
Period:
Semester 2
Assessment Summary: EXCB 100%
Assessment Detail:
  • Closed-book written examination (EXCB 100%)
Supplementary Assessment:
Like-for-like reassessment (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites: Before taking this module you must take HL22015
Learning Outcomes:
  • Describe and explain the physiological strain induced by performing sport and exercise in various extreme environments.
  • Critically discuss acute physiological responses associated with short-term exposure to extreme environments.
  • Critically discuss chronic adaptive physiological responses to prolonged exposure to extreme environments.
  • Analyse and critically evaluate practical strategies to help optimise function and performance in extreme environments.
  • Analyse and appraise how sport governing bodies and various occupational groups protect individuals from injury and illness.

Synopsis: You will examine the physiological responses of humans to extreme environments and evaluate the impact of these environments on function and exercise performance. Using real-world examples, you will also examine physiological adaptations and maladaptive responses experienced when humans are exposed to extreme environments for prolonged periods. You will explore practical strategies to help optimise function and performance and safeguard individuals exercising and working in extreme environments.

Content: The unit will focus on (i) the physiological strain induced by performing exercise in various extreme environments, including hot, cold and high altitude environments; (ii) the acute physiological responses which allow humans to maintain function/performance in such environments; (iii) the chronic adaptive physiological responses which occur following prolonged or repeated exposure to environmental extremes; (iv) practical strategies to help optimise function and performance in extreme environments; (v) how sport governing bodies and various occupational groups protect individuals from maladaptation leading to injury and illness.
