You will join a highly engaging and supportive environment as part of our Physics Technician Team, working at the heart of a department that continues to evolve and grow. This is a temporary role, providing short-term technical support to the Department, and we will provide appropriate training and development opportunities to help you succeed quickly and make a meaningful contribution during your time with us.

As part of our technical team, you will support the Department of Physics by providing high-quality technical and electronics expertise across our teaching and research laboratory spaces. Working in a collaborative environment across multiple buildings, you will contribute to the smooth running of laboratory activities, with particular responsibility for the maintenance, fault-finding, and repair of electrical and electronic equipment.

You will work closely with academic and technical colleagues to develop and construct teaching laboratory equipment and experimental setups, supporting activities across a range of year groups where required. You will also play an active role in supporting a semester of undergraduate teaching, working with students in laboratory settings to help them carry out experiments safely, develop practical skills, and make effective use of equipment.

A significant part of the role will involve providing bespoke electronics support to research laboratories, including the design and fabrication of custom analogue and digital circuits and equipment to detailed specifications. Depending on your experience, you may also contribute to the development of software for instrumentation and measurement systems (for example using LabVIEW), or support projects involving 3D printing or CAD design for both teaching- and research-based activities.

You will bring a scientific or technical background, and while a degree in Electronics or Physics would be an advantage, this is not essential. What matters most is a practical, problem-solving approach, strong electronics knowledge, and the ability to apply this effectively in a laboratory or research environment.

Experience working with electronic systems, laboratory instrumentation, or bespoke equipment in a technical or research setting would be particularly valuable. Alongside strong hands-on electronics experience, an interest in supporting teaching and helping students develop practical laboratory skills will be important for this role.

We’re looking for someone who can demonstrate:

  • The ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Clear and effective communication skills, with the confidence to engage a range of colleagues and students as needed.
  • A collaborative approach, working well within the technical team and with academic staff.
  • An awareness of health and safety compliance; experience producing risk assessments or COSHH documentation would be an advantage.

If you enjoy solving technical problems, creating practical electronic solutions, and contributing to the effective delivery of teaching, research and laboratory activities within a dynamic academic environment, we would be excited to hear from you.

Further information

This is a full time (36.5 hours per week) fixed term role until March 2027.

For an informal conversation about the role, please contact the Technical Manager for Physics, Jenny Williams (j.williams@bath.ac.uk), or the Technical Director, Daniel Lou-Hing (delh20@bath.ac.uk).
