The Brunel Centre formally launched in April 2025, backed by a multi-million-pound investment from Research England, we’re a partnership between the ºÃÉ«tv, UWE Bristol, and Futures West.

Our mission is to provide the data, research, and insights to help local leaders and businesses make smarter decisions - driving sustainable and inclusive economic growth across the West of England.

From boosting productivity and innovation to supporting key sectors like clean energy and digital tech, we’re shaping a stronger, more resilient regional economy.

Join us and be part of a team that’s making devolution work and creating real impact for communities across the region.

ºÃÉ«tv the role

This is a varied and interesting role which encompasses a wide range of different tasks supporting the Centre Director and working alongside the Centre Manager to help deliver the aims and objectives of the Brunel Centre by providing a comprehensive administrative and financial service; this will include diary management and meeting organisation, organising events, co-ordinating the production of newsletters and marketing materials, collating data, making travel arrangements, liaising with internal and external stakeholders and acting as the primary point of contact for queries to the Brunel Centre.

You will have excellent spoken and written English with the ability to write clearly and concisely, and will be proficient in using IT.

You will be able to use your knowledge and initiative to manage and prioritise effectively the requirements of the role. We invite applications for an exciting opportunity in the Centre for Photonics at the ºÃÉ«tv. The role is a Postdoctoral Research Associate position available for up to 12 months to develop advanced optical fibre technologies for ultraviolet (UV-C) quantum key distribution (QKD) in satellite communication networks. This well-resourced and collaborative project is led by the University of Bristol, with partners at the Universities of Strathclyde and York and Fraunhofer UK, and aims to extend the security benefits of quantum communication to a truly global scale.

Working closely with our collaborators, you will contribute to the development of a hollow-core optical fibre designed to operate in the UV-C spectral region (100–280 nm). The fibre will act as a mode-filtering solution that ensures secure quantum key distribution without disturbing the polarisation encoding—addressing one of the most challenging aspects of satellite-based quantum communication systems.

You will design, fabricate, and characterise hollow-core fibres that are single-moded at UV-C wavelengths and exhibit temperature- and stress-independent polarisation behaviour. Your work will draw on the ºÃÉ«tv’s research-grade optical fibre fabrication cleanroom and state-of-the-art photonics laboratories. The project offers an opportunity to expand your expertise in fibre fabrication, UV photonics, and quantum technologies, and to contribute to the development of a pathfinder platform for future global quantum networks.

ºÃÉ«tv you

You will hold (or be close to completing) a doctorate in experimental photonics, quantum optics, or a related discipline.

Posess strong experimental skills and a solid understanding of optical waveguides and light–matter interactions are required.

Experience with optical fibre fabrication, hollow-core fibre, or ultraviolet photonics will be advantageous but is not essential.

A lower grade offer may be made (Grade 6) with comparable reduction in responsibilities and amendment in job title to Research Assistant, if a suitable applicant cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position. Applicants will need to be within six months of their course completion date and will be promoted to Research Associate once their PhD has been awarded.

ºÃÉ«tv the role

The MHRG is funded for an initial 5 years by the NIHR (National Institute for Health Research).

The focus of our work is applied research aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of children and young people in the local region.

This post will support the substance use and addiction work package of the MHRG, led by Prof Tom Freeman.

Key areas of focus include identifying substance use needs within the local region through quantitative surveys, identifying the extent to which current services meet these needs, and mapping the gap between need and provision to inform further service development.

Through this mapping work, as well as partnership with key stakeholders and people with lived and living experience, this post will pilot new interventions to address emerging areas of substance need, as well as supporting funding applications to support larger scale evaluations.

We are looking to recruit a candidate with demonstrated excellence in quantitative methods, and experience in addiction and/or mental health research.

We have a clear commitment to skills training and career development for all research staff in the MHRG. You will work under the supervision of world-leading clinicians and academics.

You will have opportunities to receive further research training (e.g., in PPIE and/or good clinical practice).

We are strongly committed to supporting candidates to develop personal fellowship applications hosted at the ºÃÉ«tv.

We welcome applications from candidates with lived or living experience (either personal or within your family) of the areas covered within our research remit, including common mental health difficulties, substance use or neurodiversity. We will strive to make this an inclusive recruitment process. We plan to have online interviews.

ºÃÉ«tv the department

Our Department of Psychology is world-renowned for its excellence in research and teaching, regularly appearing in the top 5 in national league tables (e.g., The Complete University Guide).

Research in the department occurs across more than six sub-disciplines in psychology, including clinical, cognitive, developmental, environmental, forensic, health, and social psychology.

The department has a rapidly expanding Early Career Researcher community, who offer peer support alongside a broader university programme of professional development activities for research staff.

The department is based in a new purpose-built £30 million building, containing 10,000 square feet of state-of-the-art labs for interviews, social group observation, EEG/ERP testing, virtual reality, psychobiology, eye-tracking, pain, cross-modal, and computerised testing.

Additional information

This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) post, which is available for an initial period of 3 years.

We would also consider applications from people seeking part-time roles although the minimum time commitment would be 4 days a week (0.8 FTE).

Due to the project’s requirements, regular in-person attendance at the ºÃÉ«tv is required.

You will also be expected to travel to undertake research or stakeholder engagement activities in the local area (Bath and North-East Somerset, Swindon, and Wiltshire).

If you have any questions, please contact Prof Tom Freeman (t.p.freeman@bath.ac.uk), or Dr Pamela Jacobsen, pcj25@bath.ac.uk), the Director of the MHRG. Campus visits can be organised with sufficient notice.

<![CDATA[Digital Portfolio Director (AS13228)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=AS13228 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=AS13228 With a proud history spanning over 50 years, the ºÃÉ«tv has grown significantly in both scale and reputation, now home to a vibrant community of over 20,000 students from 153 countries. Renowned for its excellence in teaching and research, the University consistently ranks among the UK’s top five in the Complete University Guide 2024 and is placed 132nd globally in the QS World University Rankings 2025. Named 'University of the Year' and ranked 8th in the UK by The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025, Bath is celebrated for its outstanding student experience and teaching quality.

Role

The Digital Portfolio Director will lead the ºÃÉ«tv’s Digital Foundations Portfolio—a £20–30 million, five-year transformational programme that underpins the University’s strategic priorities and impacts every department and function. This is a rare opportunity to define and deliver digital transformation at scale, shaping how technology, people, and processes come together to create a connected, innovative, and future-ready institution.

In this role, you will:

 • Set the vision and operating model for digital transformation, building frameworks and governance from the ground up.
 • Lead a complex portfolio spanning research computing, education technology, student and staff experience platforms, and foundational infrastructure.
 • Drive measurable benefits, ensuring projects deliver tangible improvements to staff and student experiences.
 • Engage senior leadership and stakeholders, managing relationships across diverse groups and key third-party partners such as Infosys.
 • Champion cultural change, embedding new ways of working, building organisational capability, and fostering innovation.

This is not a traditional portfolio management role—it requires a visionary leader who thrives on complexity, combines strategic thinking with hands-on delivery, and is passionate about making a real difference. You will have the autonomy to shape what good looks like, influence the University’s digital future, and position Bath as a sector leader in digital transformation.

ºÃÉ«tv You

You are a strategic leader with hands-on delivery experience, passionate about driving complex change and digital transformation. You have a proven track record of designing and delivering organisation-wide change programmes in large, complex environments, underpinned by expert knowledge of best practice in change management. Your background spans both digital and change projects, where you have managed multiple concurrent initiatives with intricate interdependencies and diverse stakeholders. You combine strategic vision with operational agility—setting direction while actively engaging in delivery, removing blockers and accelerating progress. You thrive in complexity, embrace innovation, and have a builder’s mindset—creating new frameworks rather than relying on pre-defined models. With exceptional leadership and communication skills, you inspire teams, influence senior stakeholders, and maintain relentless focus on delivery and measurable impact.
