Academic Assembly terms of reference

The terms of reference for the Academic Assembly, including its procedural rules and membership.


Terms Of Reference

Purpose

The Academic Assembly may discuss and declare an opinion on any matter whatsoever relating to the University, including any matters referred to it by the Senate or the Council, and, if it so decides, submit recommendations to the Senate and the Council. See Section 14.3 of the Statutes.

Meeting Frequency

The Assembly meets two times a year. Find out about our meeting dates.

There shall be at least one ordinary meeting of the Assembly during each year, within fifteen months of the preceding meeting, which shall be addressed by the Vice-Chancellor (See Ordinance 12.1). The Chair may at any time at his or her discretion, and shall, upon the request of the Vice-Chancellor or upon the requisition in writing of not less than twenty members of the Academic Assembly stating the purpose for which the meeting is to be called, summon an extraordinary meeting of the Academic Assembly.

Co-option

There is no provision for co-option.

Alternates

There is no provision for alternates.

Quorum

There shall be a quorum of 25 members. See Standing Order 2.

Voting

See Standing Order 9.

Minutes

Recommendations are submitted to Senate and minutes are circulated to Members.

Membership

Membership is defined in Ordinance 11. The Chair is elected by Academic Assembly as prescribed in Ordinance 11 and the Framework for Elections to Council, Court, Senate, Academic Assembly and Boards of Studies.

Members

  • Dr Sabina Gheduzzi, Chair 2024 - 2027
  • The Vice-Chancellor
  • The Deputy Vice-Chancellor
  • The Pro-Vice-Chancellors
  • Members of the Academic Staff (All members of the Education and Research job family are members of the Academic Assembly)
  • The University Librarian
  • The holders of such other posts in the University and such other Members of the University as may be designated by the Senate.

In Attendance

Other members may be invited to attend for specific meetings at the discretion of the Assembly.
