Synopsis: | Learn how sociology sits within the broader context of the humanities and social sciences.
You'll examine the application of sociology in other disciplines (like anthropology, the arts, philosophy, history and political science) and the challenges other disciplines bring to sociological ideas or theories.
During this unit, you'll explore how to build sophisticated and critical argumentation, and engage with ontological, epistemological and methodological approaches beyond those in sociology. |
Content: | The unit builds on both 'The making of Modern Society' and 'Contemporary Sociological Theory' by emphasising cross-cutting sociology themes and methods. It places the discipline of Sociology within the broader context of the Humanities and Social Sciences in order to examine both the application of Sociology in other disciplines (such as Antropology, the Arts, Philosophy, History and Political Science) and the challenges that other disciplines bring to mainstream sociological ideas or theories. The unit seeks to expand students' capacity to build sophisticated and critical argumentation and engage with ontological, epistemological and methodological approaches beyond those offered by sociology. In addition to attaining these intellectual skills, the unit aims to develop and expand social and personal skills through concrete work with art-based methods of enquiry that can facilitate better 'understanding' of the world (rational, emotional, social, interactional, political, epistemological, aesthetical). |
