Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:
  • Identify a relevant sociological and/or social policy research topic and design a project that meets the study's research aims
  • Select appropriate methods, conceptual/theoretical framework, and analytical tools to undertake the project
  • Analyse, synthesise, and critically evaluate relevant sources of evidence, knowledge, and/or understanding
  • Produce a dissertation in an appropriate academic style, systematically and coherently organised



Synopsis: Develop and complete your own Sociological and/or Social Policy project. Apply knowledge and skills culminating in a coherent, long-form piece comprising a set of interrelated components. The dissertation involves all key stages of a small-scale research project. You'll identify a relevant research question, survey a corresponding research field, select suitable research design and methods, and collect and analyse materials. Dissertation work is independent, supported by an academic supervisor.

Content: The fundamental aim of the dissertation is for students to undertake and complete their own project on an area of sociological and/or social policy interest. In so doing, students are expected to apply the knowledge and skills they acquired during their first and second years of study by taking both core and optional units, and culminates in a coherent, long-form piece of writing comprising a set of interrelated components. Working on the dissertation involves all key stages of a small-scale research project, that is, identification of a relevant research question, surveying a corresponding research field, selecting an appropriate research design and methods, collecting and analysing critically research materials in light of suitable theoretical and/or empirical approaches from sociology and social policy. Dissertation work is done independently, with the support of an academic supervisor.
