  • Produce a dissertation in an appropriate academic style, systematically and coherently organised



Synopsis: Develop and complete your own Social Sciences project. You will apply knowledge and skills culminating in a coherent, long-form piece comprising a set of interrelated components. The dissertation involves all key stages of a small-scale research project. You will identify a relevant research question, survey a corresponding research field, select appropriate research design and methods, and collect and analyse materials. Dissertation work is independent, supported by an academic supervisor.

Content: The fundamental aim of the dissertation is for students to undertake and complete their own social science project. In so doing, students are expected to apply the knowledge and skills they acquired during their first and second years of study by taking both core and optional units, and culminates in a coherent, long-form piece of writing comprising a set of interrelated components. Working on the dissertation involves all key stages of a small-scale research project, that is, identification of a relevant research question, surveying a corresponding research field, selecting an appropriate research design and methods, collecting and analysing critically research materials in light of suitable theoretical and/or empirical approaches from sociology. Dissertation work is supported by an academic supervisor and emphasises student independent work and management of all parts of the project.
