Learning Outcomes: By the end of this unit, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate critical understanding of different conceptions of sustainable development at global to local levels; 2. Be able to discuss critically key conceptual approaches, analytical debates, and methodological issues concerning the political economy of sustainability; 3. Be able to interrogate effectively different forms of evidence claims; 4. Analyse a governance initiative to support sustainable development using a social scientific approach; 5. Be able to work effectively in a team and present research in a visual form. Intellectual skills:

Synopsis: "Critically assesses the concept of sustainable development and how its embedded in governance arrangements at different scales in the field of international development. You will explore the institutional effectiveness of relevant governance models, and their political legitimacy and implications for social justice. You will advance your understanding of the political economy of sustainable development, and analyse the pros and cons of different models for sustainable development."

Content: This unit critically assesses the concept of sustainable development and how it's embedded in governance arrangements at different scales in the field of international development. It explores the institutional effectiveness of relevant governance models, and their political legitimacy and implications for social justice. The unit develops understanding of the political economy of sustainable development, and analyses the pros and cons of different models for sustainable development.
