Requisites: Pre requisite basic knowledge of stem cells, cell differentiation (eg SL22020 or SL20005 or similar)
Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the current status of stem cell and regenerative medicine research.
  • Evaluate the potential application of cells, including stem cells, in key therapeutic areas.
  • Utilise a range of ICT and cognitive skills in acquiring knowledge and understanding and applying them to given situations.

Synopsis: "In this unit you will: - develop your knowledge of fundamental aspects of adult and embryonic stem cell biology. - explore how stem cells and their progeny can be used in basic research, development of cellular therapies and drug discovery. - investigate the current status of stem cell research and the potential application of stem cells in key therapeutic areas. - explore the possibilities of cell-free regenerative therapies. "

Content: Fundamental aspects of stem cell biology will be covered, including normal function, maintenance of self-renewal and control of differentiation. The biology of embryonic and adult stem cells will be discussed along with the role of stem cells in cancer. The prospects and challenges for the use of cells as new therapeutic options to treat a range of chronic degenerative and inflammatory diseases as well as drug targets will be discussed. The repair or replacement of injured or diseases tissues and organs via tissue engineering and regenerative therapies will be examined.
