Learning Outcomes: By the end of this unit, you will be able to:
  • Formulate specific questions that can be answered by research, typically by framing them as testable hypotheses.
  • Design experimental plans that address specific research questions and evaluate the ethical implications of the work.
  • Demonstrate the intellectual, time- and resource-management and technical requirements for productive, rigorous and responsible scientific investigation and reporting.
  • Write scientifically at the level of a primary research paper and/or review, a research proposal and to a non-technical audience.



Synopsis: You will develop the professional skills needed to formulate and test a scientific hypothesis. You will analyse and evaluate published literature and other sources to test your hypothesis. You will plan for the experimental investigation of the hypothesis, including control experiments, and statistical and ethical considerations. You will produce a written report on your hypothesis and experimental plan using your academic writing skills to propose, support and justify the proposal.

Content: Selection and definition of a scientific hypothesis. Principles of research project design, research methods, analysis, project management, predicting outcomes, resource planning and timelines of deliverables through a Gantt chart. Literature searching and reviewing; gathering, processing, analysis, interpretation and evaluation of information; proposing and defending sound arguments; scientific writing and presentation.
