By the end of this unit you will be able to:
Critically evaluate the theoretical accounts of autism. Compare and contrast accounts of autism as (1) a qualitatively different condition with (2) residing at the end of a continuum of autistic-like traits. Critically evaluate the evidence of interventions for autism. Compare and contrast the practical and theoretical implications of interventions for autism. |
Synopsis: | "Gain introductory knowledge of contemporary theory, research and practice in the field of autism.
You will examine the cognitive and clinical aspects of autism spectrum disorder, combined with lived experience of autism. You will learn about how certain interventions are effective in supporting autistic people and how these interventions are evaluated with reference to evidence-based practice." |
Content: | This unit will cover the following topics:
The clinical diagnostic criteria for autism, prevalence rates and factors impacting upon diagnosis.
Co-occurring conditions that are frequently present in autistic people.
Theoretical accounts of autism and a continuum of autistic-like traits.
Autistic strengths.
Clinical and digital interventions for autism. |
