Learning Outcomes: By the end of this unit you will be able to:
Synthesise a wide range of theoretical and empirical material to critically discuss key debates within the field.
Recognise the inherent variability and diversity of psychological functioning and its significance for understanding psychological disorders.
Critically evaluate the link between research into psychological disorders and the way in which these problems are formulated and managed.
Discuss current psychological approaches to the understanding and treatment of a variety of disorders, for example, depression, psychosis, and anorexia nervosa.
Critically evaluate a number of psychological approaches to the prevention and treatment of mental health problems.
Demonstrate awareness of broader potential influences, such as biological and social influences, on psychological disorder.


Synopsis: Explore the psychological approaches to the development, maintenance and treatment of a range of psychological disorders. You will study how psychological concepts are applied to mental health problems, both as an extension of norma processes and as psychopathology. Through this unit You will develop your awareness of the broader environmental context in which psychological disorders arise and have impact. You will be introduced to the concept of evidence-based practice.

Content: The content of the unit reflects the key areas of Mental Health in which Clinical Psychologists work and will cover the following topics: Approaches to the understanding and treatment of a range of psychological disorders, such as, advanced cognitive-behavioural approaches to major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, psychosis and eating disorders. Unique and shared characteristics of different disorders will be considered throughout. The theoretical and empirical foundations of different approaches to psychopathology will be considered. The applications of core psychological disciplines to clinical psychology, such as learning theory, cognitive psychology and social psychology. The importance of considering the broader context in relation to psychopathology, such as the family and peer-group. Biological factors will also be considered, particularly where there exists tensions and/or synergy between psychological and biological accounts of psychological disorders. New developments in the field will be highlighted to provide an awareness of likely future innovations in the understanding and treatment of psychopathology.
