Requisites:
Learning Outcomes: On completion of the Unit, students shall be able to: 芒锟铰dentify key periods in the development of popular culture; 芒锟铰nderstand political character of such concepts as youth, leisure, entertainment etc.; 芒锟铰xplore political economies of popular culture; 芒锟铰iscuss how popular culture negotiates age, gender, racial, religious and national identities.


Synopsis: "Learn about the key debates in the politics of popular culture. You will explore the major differences between the popular and `professional culture, and be introduced to the history of popular culture and national interpretations of global trends. You will also examine how popular culture shapes, negotiates and challenges social identities, and how it provides particular strategies of social and political action."

Content: Framing debates: Pre-modern and modern identities. Social identity in the changing world. Old and new media. Mass society and mass cultures. Genres of popular culture (cinema, fashion, popular music, sports, literature and 芒锟斤拷netriture', street art etc). National contexts.
