Learning Outcomes: Students successfully completing this unit will be able to demonstrate: 芒锟铰nderstanding of the interaction between political and economic factors on climate change. 芒锟铰nderstanding of the connection between historical economic development and current environmental crises. 芒锟铰nowledge of current economic policies proposed across the political divide to deal with climate change. 芒锟铰nowledge of key socio-economic impacts of environmental breakdown.


Synopsis: "Explore the global political economy of climate change. You will study how states pursuit of economic development has impacted the environment and how economic thinking has evolved to deal with the fallout from environmental breakdown. You will learn about: - the links between capitalist development and climate change - the role that resource extraction played in socialist economies - state-of-the-art economic policies proposed to bring about the green transition "

Content: This unit will cover some or all of the following topics: fossil capitalism; the resource curse; carbon pricing; the Green New Deal; eco-socialism; degrowth; emissions trading; climate finance and stranded assets; ESG investing; from petro-states to electro-states.
