Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, the students will be able to: > critically evaluate the continuing impact of colonialism on Asian, African and Latin American states, societies and people; > challenge the dominant narratives regarding violence and conflict affecting the said spaces; > appreciate the variety of ways resistance to colonial dominance can take; > develop skills to understand how the legacy of colonialism continues to impact the contemporary politics at the core; > demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in large-group settings.

Synopsis: "Advance your understanding of the political dynamics and patterns of postcolonial resistance. You will examine the deep structural impact of foreign intervention in areas such as Asia, Africa and Latin America, focusing on different types of resistance. These range from non-violence to `intolerable violence, and assertion of victim status to the framing of local conflicts as `internal and `endemic."

Content: This module will advance our understanding of the politics, dynamics and patterns of resistance in the postcolonial spaces, with particular focus on Africa, Asia and Latin America. The module aims to familiarise students to the deep structural impact of colonialism on the states and societies of these regions with the view to studying how the everyday life of the state and non-state actors continues to be shaped by that legacy. The focus of the module will be as much bottom-up as it will be top-down. Furthermore, it will show how the boundaries of the concepts like postcolonial', neo-colonial', victim', oppressors', core', periphery' are increasingly blurred and neat categorization is not always possible. A key focus of the module will be to study various ways in which resistance takes shape - ranging from regional solidarity among states to guerrilla movements, and resistance through assertion of a victim status.
