Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit, students will be able to: 芒锟铰emonstrate a critical understanding of the role of language in power relations. 芒锟铰pply theories to their own analysis of contemporary contexts. 芒锟铰ritically reflect on their own and others芒锟斤拷 analyses of power relations.


Synopsis: "Explore the relationship between language and power. You will study and reflect critically on interpersonal and socio-political contexts, and the ways in which power dynamics are maintained and / or challenged through language. You will then apply these theories to your own analysis of case studies."

Content: This unit will interrogate the relationship of language and power in areas such as: Interpersonal and social contexts Gender Multilingualism and language contact Globalisation, minority languages, and the politics of international languages (e.g. English) Politics
