Learning Outcomes: Upon unit completion, students will be able to: 芒锟铰emonstrate ability to analyse key issues in the study of democratisation. 芒锟铰dentify the substantive features and dynamics of individual country case studies. 芒锟铰how familiarity with the main theoretical debates and interpretative controversies in the democratisation literature. 芒锟铰how understanding of the methodological challenges involved in academic research on democratisation. 芒锟铰ommunicate effectively in written and spoken forms on topics within the unit.


Synopsis: "Examine the nuances of the multiple forms of democratic transition and consolidation, and authoritarian regimes across the world. You will develop an understanding of different regime types, investigating why democratisation has been less successful in some regions than others, with examples from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe. You will explore key topics in existing literature on democratisation and authoritarianism, while covering a broad regional range and evidence."

Content: Framing debates: Analysis of the multiple forms of political system. Investigation of multiple case studies. Role of elites and society in (non-)transitions. Position of history and culture in (non-) transitions.
