Learning Outcomes: |
After taking this unit, the student should be able to:
芒锟铰escribe mathematically the radiation, transmission, and guidance of electromagnetic radiation;
芒锟铰xplain the physical principles underlying Rayleigh, Brillouin, and Raman scattering;
芒锟铰pply Fourier techniques to problems in diffraction;
芒锟铰escribe the interaction of light with artificially-structured materials;
芒锟铰utline the basics of second-order nonlinear frequency conversion.
|
Synopsis: | You will advance your knowledge and understanding of electromagnetism by studying the mathematical framework used to describe radiation, scattering and guidance of electromagnetic waves. You will apply Fourier techniques to problems in diffraction, and see how light interacts with artificially-structured materials and how nonlinear interactions can change the colour of light.
|
Content: | Radiation (2 hours): Electromagnetic potentials, near- and far-field radiation, radiation from a dipole.
Guided waves (6 hours): Metal and dielectric waveguides; optical modes in waveguides; optical fibres.
Transform methods in optics (4 hours): Fraunhofer diffraction and Fourier optics.
Photonic materials (4 hours): Complex refractive index and dielectric function; photonic crystals, metamaterials, plasmonics, micro-resonators.
Introduction to nonlinear optics (2 hours): Second harmonic generation; phase matching by birefringence and temperature tuning; periodic poling.
