|
Learning Outcomes: |
After taking this unit, the student should be able to:
芒锟铰uantitatively describe the key elements of the physics of the environment;
芒锟铰se Physics and the scientific method to assess key environmental issues;
芒锟铰onfidently and accurately address new environment themes by using physics and the knowledge gained in the unit;
芒锟铰ynthesise the physical aspects behind key environmental problems and recognise which aspects cannot be addressed by physics alone.
|
Synopsis: | Develop your understanding of the physics underlying a range of environmental topics and learn how evidence is gathered, as well as how physics is used in addressing current environmental issues. You will explore a range of topics, such as atmospheric physics, global climate studies and power generation.
|
Content: | Physics of the Atmosphere (3 hours): movements of the atmosphere, precipitations and weather, extreme events.
Global Climate Studies (4 hours): climate variations and cycles, fossil fuels, pollution and greenhouse gases, climate change.
Power generation (3 hours): reminders of relevant thermodynamics, fossil fuels, nuclear power and renewable energies (terrestrial and marine); the hydrogen economy; synthesis of the physics of mixed energy approaches.
Physics on the international scene (4 hours): Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, environment "score cards", communication of physics and key results to a general audience.
Topical environmental controversies where physics should be/have been used (2 hours).
