Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit, you will be able to: 1. Describe a range of typical product design tools and methods which enhance engineering design practice, particularly those which consider sustainability and user requirements such as style, form and interaction. 2. Select and trial new tools to improve your design practice. 3. Describe a range of typical product development models and processes. 4. Select the most promising models to manage the product development in varying contexts. 5. Identify the key elements of successful products from a commercial and a sustainability perspective.

Synopsis: Expand your experience of tools and methods for use in your engineering design practice and promotes a life-long learning approach to them. It introduces you to tools and methods to support both specific product design activities and strategic, cultural, organisational and technological aspects of product development.

Content: Product design tools and methods Descriptive and prescriptive product development processes and models Methods and approaches to support new product development Examples of strategic, cultural, organisational and technological aspects of product development Topics for self-study that could be assessed
