MA30346: Control theory

[Page last updated: 22 May 2025]

Academic Year: 2025/26
Owning Department/School: Department of Mathematical Sciences
Credits: 6 [equivalent to 12 CATS credits]
Notional Study Hours: 120
Level: Honours (FHEQ level 6)
Period:
Semester 1
Assessment Summary: EXCB 100%
Assessment Detail:
  • MA32046 Closed-book written examination (EXCB 100%)
Supplementary Assessment:
Like-for-like reassessment (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites: Before taking this module you must take MA22016 OR take MA20220
In taking this module you cannot take MA30061
Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit, you should be able to (i) demonstrate a good knowledge and understanding of elementary concepts from control theory, (ii) recognise practical problems where control methods can be used effectively, and (iii) solve basic control-related problems.

Synopsis: This unit will explore some of the mathematics which is relevant in an engineering context. You will learn how to model engineering systems, how to mathematically analyse those models, and how to design controllers based on those models. In the course of this, you will both apply mathematics that you learned earlier in your programme and learn new mathematical techniques.

Content: Input-state-output system. Transfer function, frequency response, step response, impulse response. Modelling of systems in different physical domains (including mechanical and electrical). Controller design.
