Synopsis: | Learn about the foundations of psychology and how they apply to sport, exercise, and health.
You'll study topics covering a range of theoretical approaches to psychology (such as personality and behaviourism); key psychological concepts (such as motivation and confidence); and mental skills that can be applied to sport, exercise, and health contexts (such as imagery and goal setting). |
Content: | * Introduction to psychology: aims of the discipline; key organisations; working domains and practitioner roles. * Dominant theoretical approaches: schools of thought; psychodynamic; behaviourist; cognitive; humanistic; personality theories. * Key concepts: motivation; confidence & self-efficacy; emotion & stress; competitive anxiety; coping & resilience; concentration & attention. |
Aims: | To provide a general introduction to the academic discipline of psychology in the contexts of sport, exercise, and health. Students will have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with dominant theoretical approaches in psychology and will be introduced to key psychological concepts. |
