  • Critically evaluate and apply theoretical and empirical results, and advise Regulatory and Antitrust policy.

Synopsis: "Learn about Industrial Organisation - an applied and policy-oriented subfield of microeconomics that studies how markets work in the real-world. You will apply simple theoretical models of imperfect competition from microeconomics, to analyse practical questions about the organisation and functioning of markets. Your theoretical analysis of firm behaviour and markets will be complemented with the study of empirical strategies and design that help practitioners answer policy relevant questions."

Content: The unit builds on the analysis of strategic firm behaviour with the aim to understand the basic drivers, workings, and implications of real-world firm practices, such as product differentiation, collusion, mergers, entry deterrence, etc. It also investigates the role of government in markets through the introduction of regulatory economics. The final part is dedicated to empirical IO, where we review some of the econometric challenges and methods in the field. Key concepts and methodology are introduced during lectures, practiced in seminars and applications are discussed through case studies.
