In taking this module you cannot take CH40086
Learning Outcomes: At the end of this Unit, students should be able to:
* Demonstrate an understanding of how and why the coordination chemistry of metals are used in biological systems
* Account through descriptive chemistry for the bonding features relating to structural and reactivity patterns in simple biomolecules
* Demonstrate an understanding of the roles of metals in medicine as therapeutics or diagnostics
* Demonstrate an understanding of the reasons for metal activity and toxicity in living systems with a focus on applications in metals in medicine and imaging

Content: Metals in biology - basic coordination chemistry and analytical methods used in bioinorganic chemistry - metal containing enzyme systems - structural role of metals - metals in medicine.

Skills: Problem solving (T, F, A), Scientific writing (F, A), Critical thinking (F, A).

Aims: The overall aim of this course is to provide an introduction to bio-inorganic chemistry with a focus on the role of d-, f- and p-block metals in biology.
