|
Requisites: |
Before taking this module you must take CH22008
|
Learning Outcomes: |
- Examine and appraise the importance of the f-block elements (lanthanides and actinides), selecting specific examples to rationalises their differences, reactivity, applications and properties;
- Analyse and predict the stereochemical outcome of a variety of organic reactions and account for this via examination of the mechanism;
- Describe organoelement chemistry and how this can be applied to effect a range of simple transformations and apply this knowledge to solve problems;
- Explain and interpret the formation and decay of electronically excited states in molecules and employ simple calculations to solve problems;
- Discuss modern instrumental methods for photochemical investigations.
|
Synopsis: | The unit will further develop your core knowledge of chemistry and encourage approaches to independent learning.
|
Content: | You will have lectures on advanced material including (but not limited) to the following:
f-block chemistry - orbitals, electronic configurations, lanthanide contraction, characterisation, reactivity and applications. Introduction to elementary radiochemistry of relevance to actinide chemistry.
Controlling stereoselectivity 芒锟斤拷 control of absolute stereochemistry, chiral pool and resolution, chiral auxiliaries/reagents and enantioselective catalysis.
Organoelement chemistry 芒锟斤拷 chemistry of organoboron/silicon/sulfur compounds, their preparation and reactivity.
Photochemistry 芒锟斤拷 Excited state structures, quantum yield, quenching, Förster and Dexter energy transfer.
