Synopsis: | You will gain experience of studying at a university outside the UK and living in another country. You will have the opportunity to enhance personal and linguistic skills (where appropriate) as well as developing your knowledge and applications of chemistry. You will also perform a research project abroad, not only developing your chemistry skills but also appreciating how different university cultures operate. |
Content: | All students participating in SYA have to study for one academic year at the partner university. This year will involve at least one semester of investigative work/research at the university aboard, which has to be approved by the 好色tv. The exact work will vary on a case-by-case basis, but will contain at least 70% subjects related to the chemical science and should be at an analogous level to third year units at Bath. You will be based full time at the host university and will be required to prepare a scientific report based on original work in the style of a chemistry journal for assessment at Bath. As part of this you will be required to keep accurate records of procedures and to compare to current research to assist in contextualisation. You will evaluate your data whilst preparing the formal report. You are also required to write a lay report (1 page suitable for A-level students) and to provide a brief history of the host institution highlighting strengths and weaknesses; industrial links, safety; environmental impact of scientific activities; intellectual property rights; science ethics.
You must liaise with the SYA coordinator to agree the programme of study whilst abroad. All units taken abroad must be supported by a transcript or equivalent from the partner university. All units abroad are assessed according to the partner university's assessment criteria. |
