Learning Outcomes:
  • Apply the knowledge and skills gained from University to real-world applications of chemistry and related areas;
  • Demonstrate a range of transferable skills including team work, project management and communication (both in oral and written forms);
  • Perform an extended programme of experimental/computational work, develop necessary practical skills, evaluating the results and identifying suitable avenues of future work;
  • Participate in discussions concerning the work programme and contribute ideas as appropriate;
  • Examine the safety (and ethical) implications of the work and keep accurate records;
  • Critically compare your findings to the current state-of-the art in the field;
  • Analyse the market environment in which the company operates and describe the company's procedures on training, intellectual property rights and ethical considerations.



Synopsis: This unit provides you with an opportunity to gain a years experience working in a chemical or related organisation. This introduces you to the factors affecting professional practice of chemistry in the workplace. You will apply the knowledge and skills gained at university to real applications of chemistry.

Content: This year will involve a programme of investigative work/research in a company (or organisation) approved by the Department of Chemistry. The exact work will vary on a placement-by-placement basis. You will be based full time at the placement provider and will be required to prepare a scientific report based on original work in the style of a chemistry journal. As part of this you will be required to keep accurate records of procedures and to compare to current research to assist in contextualisation. You will evaluate your data and prepare a formal report. You are also required to write a lay report (short summary suitable for A-level students) and to provide a brief history and appraise the market place of the company, as well as the health and safety and ethical implications of your research.
