CH32043: Masters distance learning B

[Page last updated: 23 April 2025]

Academic Year: 2025/26
Owning Department/School: Department of Chemistry
Credits: 15 [equivalent to 30 CATS credits]
Notional Study Hours: 300
Level: Honours (FHEQ level 6)
Period:
Academic Year
Assessment Summary: CWSI 30%, EXCB 70%
Assessment Detail:
  • Coursework exercises Individual (CWSI 30%)
  • Closed-book written examination (EXCB 20%)
  • Closed-book written examination (EXCB 50%)
Supplementary Assessment:
Like-for-like reassessment (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites: Before taking this module you must take CH12002 AND take CH12005 AND take CH22008 AND take CH22009
Learning Outcomes: Synoptic: Demonstrate knowledge from the key aspects of core chemistry in earlier years of the programmes to solve problems from across the discipline boundaries of chemistry. Core self-directed study:
  • Stereoselective synthesis: Analyse and predict the stereochemical outcome of a variety of organic reactions and account for this via examination of the mechanism;
  • Photo-chemistry
    • Explain and interpret the formation and decay of electronically excited states in molecules and employ simple calculations to solve problems;
    • Discuss modern instrumental methods for photochemical investigations.
  • Drug discovery:
    • Outline the reagents, conditions and reaction mechanisms of relevant transformations for the synthesis and functionalisation of heterocyclic compounds;
    • Evaluate and propose synthetic routes to small-molecule drug targets.

Synopsis: The unit provides you with an opportunity to revise fundamental chemistry from years 1 and 2 (synoptic component). This will also allow you to develop core knowledge of chemistry, which will be expanded upon in the final year of the course and to encourage approaches to independent learning (core self-directed component).

Content: The content in this unit will be based on two strands: 1) Key aspects of the core units from years 1 and 2 covering organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry. This is a synoptic component covering level 4 and 5 content from previous years of the course. This will be supported by independent learning and augmented by directed reading and supporting materials to prepare you for an overarching synoptic exam. 2) In addition you must study three topics, which are analogous to topics studied by third year MChem students. Topics will include (a) Drug discovery (b) organic stereoselective chemistry, (c) photochemistry.

Course availability:

CH32043 is Optional on the following courses:

Department of Chemistry
  • USCH-AKM21 : MChem(Hons) Chemistry for Drug Discovery with professional placement (Year 3)
  • USCH-AKM21 : MChem(Hons) Chemistry for Drug Discovery with study abroad (Year 3)
