|
Learning Outcomes: |
- Use a variety of methods to search for literature from a range of information sources on a particular chemistry-related topic;
- Compare and contrast theories published in the literature;
- Appraise information from a range of sources to construct a logical discussion of a current chemistry topic;
- Critically evaluate the validity of the conclusions presented in the literature;
- Draw conclusions and defend these conclusions by referring to relevant evidence in the appropriate context.
|
Synopsis: | The aim of the unit is to allow you to develop skills in conducting an in-depth analysis on a chemically-related topic, by collating and critically reviewing original data and presenting the work as written and oral reviews. The dissertation should not simply be a factual report but will identify and explain correlations, trends and exceptions within the data reviewed.
|
Content: | A chemistry topic suitable for review and requiring access to primary data will be chosen by you from a list provided. You will be assigned a tutor to monitor progress and give advice (including formative feedback). The data and its analysis will be reported as a dissertation and an oral presentation. It will be defended in a viva-voce examination. You will attend training on the use of appropriate information sources and data search engines.
