Supplementary Assessment: |
|
Requisites: | Before taking this module you must take CH22010 |
Learning Outcomes: |
Appraise the current literature, identifying key concepts and emerging areas, in a chosen topic, critically judging the reliability and significance of the chemical information identified;
Reflect on and summarise your literature review findings coherently;
Design an experimental protocol to safely investigate a research topic and record observations and data in an efficient manner;
Analyse and interpret the collected data to draw appropriate conclusions, relating the results to the current context of the field;
Produce an accurate account of your findings, communicating these in a variety of formats. |
Content: | Semester 1: In conjunction with a supervisor, a topic of recent chemical importance will be selected. You will select the key literature in the area and use these to prepare a detailed, critical survey of the area. You will need to prepare a report on your chosen topic in semester 1 and present your findings via an oral presentation and written report. Several skills session (e.g. literature searches) will be available.
Semester 2: A research topic will be selected with a supervising member of staff and a programme of experimental work planned. You will then manage and perform an independent study into the area. You will prepare a short report (in an academic journal format) and have a viva-voce examination on your project.
The topic of the literature project in Semester 1 and the practical project in Semester 2 are independent and are not necessarily set by the same supervisor. |
Synopsis: | This unit will give you the skills required for retrieving information from a variety of sources of chemical literature (e.g. publications, patents, databases) and reporting these in a clear and concise manner. You will have the opportunity to undertake an independent investigative research project in an academic environment. This will augment practical proficiencies and develop necessary enquiry based skills. |
